Light micrograph of the surface of a rabbit's tongue. The lower two thirds of this section consists of tough muscle fibres, which are need for the manipulation of food. The top third shows the mucosal surface composed of many feathery, filiform papillae, which have stained pink. The bulbous protrusion midway along the mucosal surface is a taste bud.
