Description
Penis carcinoma. Light micrograph of a section through a carcinoma of the penis. A carcinoma is a cancer which develops from a lining tissue. Carcinomas of the penis are rare, and are more common in uncircumcised men with poor personal hygiene. The cancerous cells have large irregular purple nuclei. There is a band of connective tissue at centre (pale pink). If the cancer is identified early, radiotherapy generally provides a successful cure. However, in extremely malignant cases, surgical removal of part or all of the penis may be necessary. Magnification: x50 at 35mm size.
