Description
Spinal cord. Light micrograph showing a cross section of a human spinal cord. The spinal cord is a downward extension of the brain together with which it forms the central nervous system. At the core of the spinal cord is a butterfly-shaped region called the grey matter which is formed by unmyelinated nerve cells. This is surrounded by the white matter composed of myelinated nerve cells which carry messages from the brain to the spinal cord or vice versa. The central canal is found at the very centre of the spinal cord; it is an extension of the ventricles of the brain. Magnification: x12 at 10x12cm size.
