Artist's Description
Lithium stored in oil. Lithium is a reactive metal element, part of the alkali metals group of the periodic table. It will react rapidly with the water and oxygen in air, and is stored in paraffin oil (as seen) to prevent this from happening. However, lithium has a low density and floats in the oil, so some oxidation of the exposed part will occur unless other measures are taken.
