Artist's Description
Lion dragging prey. Female lion (Panthera leo) dragging the carcass of a wildebeest (Connochaetes sp.). The lionesses do almost all of a pride's hunting, catching large herbivores and their offspring. They hunt cooperatively, with a group of lionesses surrounding the prey whilst it is simultaneously ambushed by a single individual. The victim is dragged to the ground and strangled with a bite to the throat. P. leo is found in savannah and scrubland throughout sub-Saharan Africa and in scattered areas in India. Photographed in the Mala Mala Game Reserve, South Africa.
