Description
Pneumonia. Light micrograph of a section of pneumonic human lung tissue. The structures visible in this image bear little resemblance to healthy lung tissue. The irregularly-shaped white regions are collapsed alveoli, the pink areas are alveolar wall tissue and the reddish-brown regions are blood cell masses, probably containing erythrocytes, phagocytes and bacteria. The round white area at lower right is a sectioned blood capillary. Pneumonia is an inflammation of the lung tissue caused by bacterial infection. The various bacteria which cause pneumonia are usually sensitive to antbiotics and recovery is generally rapid.
