Artist's Description
Polarised light micrograph of a polished and etched section of a titanium alloy, a material used in aerospace applications because of its high strength-to-weight ratio. Titanium alloys are also used in biomedical engineering, for example, in hip replacements. Here, the sample displays twinned grains in the areas close to the material's surface at the top of the picture. These result from the alloy being rolled into shape while it was cold; in other words, they are mechanically induced twins. Magnification: x100 at 35mm size. Reference: MICROCOSMOS Page 146, Figure 7.40.
