Description
Light fountain experiment. 19th-century illustration of the light fountain invented by Swiss physicist Jean-Daniel Colladon (1802-1893). This invention is recreated using a lamp, a reflector, a spherical glass and a water box. The light is trapped in the water jet (left) by total internal reflection, the principle used in fibre optics. This illustration, part of a section titled 'Experiences de Physique sans Appareils' (illustrating popular physics experiments that don't require the use of laboratory equipment), is from 'Physique Populaire' (Emile Desbeaux, 1891).
