Description
This late untitled drawing from c.1515 by Leonardo da Vinci, (1452-1519), is known under various names such as The Pointing Lady or Young Woman in a Landscape. It has also generated speculation as to her identity which includes Beatrice d'Este (the Duchess of Milan), or Matelda from Dante's Purgatorio. Her features and smile have suggested Lisa Gherardini, (Mona Lisa). Alternatively, comparing it to other drawings of Leonardo, it could be a design for a masque, or, given her diaphanous drapery, she is a nymph or angel.
