Artist's Description

A lava channel on the surface of Venus, imaged by the Magellan radar-mapping spacecraft in early 1991. The channel seen here runs from west to east (left to right), only 200km of its 1,200km length being included in this frame. The streamlined shape of some of the structures within the channel indicates that the lava was very hot and fluid at the time of the flow, causing both thermal and mechanical erosion. The lava flow ocurred after the period of tectonic faulting that caused the bright lines seen on the surface running from top left to bottom right.
