Laser interferometer. Researcher operating a laser interferometer to measure the vibrations of a membrane used in audio headphones. An interferometer detects a physical change by the interference between two waves travelling on two different paths. In this case the interference is occurring due to sound producing a movement (vibration) of the membrane. The computer screen (upper left) displays a graphical representation of the overall movement of the membrane. Goggles worn by the researcher protect him from being blinded by the intense energy of the laser beams.
