Artist's Description
A leaf of Solomon's Seal ( Polygonatum x hybridum ) infested with larvae of the Solomon's Seal sawfly, Phymatocera aterrima. Sawflies are so called due the females possessing serrated ovipositors that are used to cut an opening into leaves in which to lay their eggs. The larvae appear similar to the caterpillars of butterflies, but differ in eventually developing six pairs of "false" abdominal legs.The picture shows a plant of Solomon's Seal photographed in Norfolk UK in June. Left unchecked, infestations of P. aterrima can result in total defoliation of plants in the space of a few days.
