Description
Knights jousting in the Middle Ages. 19th-century artwork of two knights charging each other with lances at a jousting tournament. Jousting as a formal sport based on chivalric principles emerged in Europe in the Late Middle Ages (14th to 16th centuries). It involved heavily armoured knights on war horses charging at each other either side of a partition called the tilt. The aim was to hit the opponent with the lance. Early jousting could be fatal, but later forms were more regulated. Here, the joust is being watched from a pavilion (upper right), and pages and other knights are in attendance. This woodcut dates from 1870.
