Keel-billed toucan. View of a keel-billed toucan (Ramphastos sulfuratus) perched on a branch in a tree. This toucan lives in the rainforests and forest edges of northern South America. They live in small social groups, and eat a variety of foods, including berries, insects and even the eggs of other birds, which are stolen from their nests. The enormous colourful bill of this toucan can be used with great dexterity in picking berries, which are swallowed by tilting the head back with the bill open, tossing the food into the throat. It is also used for signalling in social situations, and for warding off predators. Photographed in Belize.
