Artist's Description

Juvenile ladder snake Rhinechis (Elaphe) scalaris, so called because the adults often have a ladderlike pattern of two longitudinal stripes on the upper side of their body. This species inhabits only sunny, dry terrain (but also hedges and vineyards) and can tolerate temperatures of forty degrees Celcius. It is found on the ground, it is shy and not easy to catch. This ladder snake will grow to about 1.4 m in length and it feeds primarily on field mice, lizards, and small birds. These snakes inhabit southern Europe; this specimen comes from Camargue, S. France, 1985.
