Artist's Description

Jupiter observed from the Tarn Bank observatory in Cumberland, England, on 12 March 1860. The appearance and changes in Jupiter's clouds bands, shown here, had been regularly observed by astronomers as telescopes improved over the years. Cumberland now forms part of the county of Cumbria, and Tarn Bank, near the village of Greysouthen, was near the River Derwent. The Tarn Bank observatory was built and operated by the amateur astronomer Isaac Fletcher (1827-1879), but this drawing was made by another amateur astronomer of the time, a Captain William Stephen Jacob (1813-1862).
