Artist's Description
Jupiter in July 2009, Hubble Space Telescope (HST) image. The largest planet in the solar system, Jupiter is a gas giant with an atmosphere of swirling coloured clouds. It is 142,984 kilometres across at the equator. The dark smudge at lower right is a large impact site in Jupiter's southern polar region that appeared on 19 July 2009. It is thought to have been caused by a small comet or asteroid impacting the planet. Image obtained by Hubble's Wide Field Camera 3 (WFC3) on 23 July 2009, at which point Jupiter was around 600 million kilometres distant.
