Jupiter as Death, 16th century artwork. The male figure at centre is Jupiter (Zeus), chief of the Greek and Roman gods. At upper left is the zodiacal sign for the planet Jupiter, named after this god. The scythe and baby child represent death and life, with pouring of water and a goat in the background. This artwork is from Libellus de Stellis (1587) by the German astronomer and theologian Heinrich Decimator (c.1544-1615). This book was published in Magdeberg, and was both a literary and astronomical work, containing artworks of constellations, interspersed with Latin poetry and mythological artworks like the one seen here. The title translates as 'Book of Stars'.
