Joseph Banks (1743-1820), English naturalist and botanist. Banks is seated at a desk with papers and a globe. To his right is an open window with an ocean view. Banks took part in Captain James Cook's first great voyage (1768-1771). The Latin quote by his hand states 'cras ingens iterabimus aequor' (tomorrow we shall set out upon the vast ocean). He was elected president of the Royal Society in 1778, holding the post for 48 years, and made a baronet in 1781. This is a 1774 mezzotint engraving by English artist William Dickinson (1746-1823) of the 1773 artwork by the English portrait painter Sir Joshua Reynolds (1723-1792).
