Artist's Description

John Ray (1627-1705). Caricature of the English naturalist John Ray. Ray is widely regarded as one of the earliest of the English parson-naturalists - clerics who often saw the study of natural science as an extension of their religious work. He published important works on botany, zoology and natural theory. His classification of plants 'Historia Plantarum' was an important step towards modern biological classification (taxonomy).
