Description
John Evelyn (1620-1706), English author, diarist and naturalist. Evelyn was a founder member of the Royal Society. He spent most of his life in minor government posts but was also a prolific writer. He wrote the influential 'Sylva' (1664), which contained practical information on tree cultivation as well as an argument for the conservation of English forests. His diary from the period 1620 to 1706 is an important historical source on life in the 17th century. His other books covered topics such as architecture, gardening, politics and art. This engraving, based on a portrait by Godfrey Kneller, is from the posthumous edition of Evelyn's 'Memoirs' (1818).
