A Shinkansen ('Bullet Train') at Tokyo Station, Japan. The first Bullet Train service was introduced on 1 October 1964 on the Tokyo-Osaka line, a distance of 515km. This line has now been extended to Hakatashima (a further 554km). There are also two other lines: Tokyo-Niigata (297km) and Tokyo-Morioka (492km). The maximum speed of these electrically-powered trains is 210 km/h in service, although speeds of 270 km/h were achieved during trials. The running of these trains is notoriously efficient; well over 90% of services arrive within 30 seconds of their scheduled time.
