James Paget (1814-1899), British physician and one of the founders of modern pathology. Paget discovered that the disease trichinosis was caused by the larvae of a parasitic nematode worm that migrate around the body and cause pain and fever. He was the first to describe osteitis deformans (Paget's disease), a chronic bone disease that leads to an increased risk of fracture. Paget was also surgeon to Queen Victoria and Prince Albert. He was elected Fellow of the Royal Society in 1851, and made a baronet in 1871. Engraving by Charles Hall, after a portrait by British painter George Richmond (1809-1896).
