Description
James Neild (1744-1814), British prison reformer, writing a letter to the Earl of Romney. At bottom right is a copy of Neild's 'Remarks on Prisons' addressed to his friend John Coakley Lettsom, who persuaded Neild to publish in 'The Gentleman's Magazine'. Neild had inspected prisons in the UK, and in France, Flanders and Germany. His 'State of Prisons in England, Scotland and Wales' (1812) helped trigger reforms. This engraving is based on an 1804 artwork by Samuel De Wilde (1751–1832). Engraving from Nichols's 'Illustrations of the Literary History of the Eighteenth Century', an 8-volume work published between 1817 and 1858.
