Artist's Description

James Franck (1882-1964), German physicist. Franck was born and educated in Germany, receiving his PhD from Berlin University in 1906. He was awarded the Iron Cross during World War I. Franck worked mostly on atomic physics, including what became known as the Franck-Condon principle. His work with Gustav Hertz, on electrons impacting atoms, confirming the Bohr model of the atom, won them the 1925 Nobel Prize in Physics. Franck protested against the Nazis and moved to the USA when they came to power. He also spoke out against the use of the atom bomb at Hiroshima. Photographed in 1961.
