Artist's Description
Jacques Alexandre Cesar Charles (1746-1823), French balloonist. Charles made the first-ever flight in a hydrogen balloon on 1 December 1783, together with Marie-Noel Robert. Charles was also a scientist and professor of physics. He was elected to the French Academy of Sciences and is best remembered for the gas law named after him, Charles' Law. Artwork published in 1820 by the French Academy of Sciences.
