Description
Italian cathedral dome. 18th-century diagram of the dome of Florence Cathedral (Basilica di Santa Maria del Fiore), Florence, Italy. Often called simply the Duomo (Il Duomo di Firenze), this cathedral was started in 1296, and completed with this dome structure by Italian architect Filippo Brunelleschi in 1436. The octagonal dome is an example of Italian Renaissance style, with a double shell of sandstone and marble, crowned with a cupola (top) 114 metres above the ground. The dome is 45 metres across. Artwork by Bernardo Sansone Sgrilli (fl.1733-1755) in 'Descrizione e studj dell'insigne fabbrica di S. Maria del Fiore' (1733).
