ISS over the Earth at night after sunset. Illustration of the International Space Station (ISS) in orbit around the Earth, passing over city lights in Europe and the Middle East. This view looks west towards the glow of the rising Sun on the Earth's limb. The ISS orbits the Earth at an altitude of around 390 kilometres. It has been crewed since 2000, and operates as a microgravity and space environment research laboratory, with experiments conducted by crew members.
