Description
Iron-graphene nanostructure simulation. Molecular dynamics simulation of iron particles (red, top) sinking into a carbon substrate (blue) over time. Atoms of carbon (blue spheres) bind to the iron particles (middle) which also merge with each other (bottom). The view at right is from underneath the sheet of carbon (graphene). This simulation, combined with experimental high-resolution electron microscopy results, shows that the process is catalytic and induced by electron irradiation. This research was carried out at the Center for Nanophase Materials Science at Oak Ridge National Laboratory, USA. This image was published in 2012.
