Artist's Description

Iron-acid reaction. Iron metal reacts slowly in hydrochloric acid and gives off hydrogen gas (bubbles). The use of powdered iron or iron wool speeds up the reaction due to the increased surface area. Iron is less reactive in acids than metals such as magnesium. The other product of this reaction is iron (II) chloride (FeCl2), which forms an aqueous solution in the water present in the acid.
