Description
Investigation into food colouring. Samples and text from an investigation into Halloween sweets that made children ill in Kansas City, Kansas, USA, in 1950. One of the food colourings present in the sweets was FD&C Orange Number 1. Investigations showed that this colouring caused abdominal cramps and diarrhoea. It was banned from food use in 1955. This investigation of a food colouring that was previously thought safe, led to an extensive program of testing food colourings by the Food and Drugs Administration.
