Inspection of the US 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion by Major Charity E. Adams (1918-2002, foreground) and Captain Abbie N. Campbell in Birmingham, England, 1945. The 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion were the first female, all African-American battalion to do overseas service during the Second World War. The battalion were sent to sort through backlogs of mail sent to overseas officers and ensure it was delivered to them.
