Description
A hollow needle known as a butterfly cannula being inserted into a vein on the back of a patient's hand, prior to setting up an intravenous drip. An intravenous drip is used for the continuous administration of blood, plasma, saline, glucose solution or drugs. The cannula is connected by a tube to a bag or bottle suspended above the patient. The rate of flow can be adjusted according to the rate of drips seen in a transparent chamber in the tube, which also serves as a trap for bubbles.
