Description
Influenza virion surface, artwork. This flu virus (Orthomyxovirus) particle (virion) consists of a core (not seen) of RNA (ribonucleic acid). This core is coated with several layers, with the outer one seen here. This outer membrane layer (green) is obtained from the host cell that produced this virion. Viral proteins in the membrane are haemagglutinin (red, evenly distributed) and neuraminidase enzymes (yellow clusters). These aid the process of entering and exiting a cell when the virion is replicating itself. The influenza virus infects the respiratory tract, causing a fever, aching muscles and weakness. For an artwork inside an influenza virion, see image M055/270.
