Artist's Description
Indian wildlife. The animals and plants illustrated here include a toad (Bufo melanostictus), titled 'Mussoorie Specimen of the Common Toad of all India'. At left are seeds of the 'Mussoorie Arum', and two insects are shown across top. This is a watercolour by the British illustrator Olivia Fanny Tonge (1858-1949). Tonge travelled to India from 1908 to 1913, producing sketches of the plants and animals she saw there. A collection of Tonge's sketchbooks were presented to the Natural History Museum, London, UK, in 1952.
