Herschel's 40-foot telescope. Illustration depicting the large reflecting telescope built by Sir William Herschel in 1787-9 at a cost of #4000. The tube of the telescope was forty feet (12 metres) long. Unlike other reflector telescopes, the eyepiece was situated at the open end of the tube. This removed the need for a secondary mirror and its associated loss of light. The position of the eyepiece did, however, mean that the astronomer had to climb some distance to make an observation; one visitor, the Italian astronomer Piazzi, fell from the structure and broke his arm. The telescope was finally dismantled in 1839.
