Description
Title page of 'Il Saggiatore' (1623) by Italian astronomer Galileo Galilei (1564-1642). This book, the title of which translates as 'The Assayer', was about comets and contained treatises on natural philosophy and mathematics (two muses shown at left and right). The coat of arms at top (with three bees) is that of the Barberini family who were patrons of Galileo. The text (in Italian) names Galileo as the philosopher and mathematician of the Grand Duke of Tuscany. It also refers to Galileo's membership of the Lyncean Academy (founded 1603). The book is addressed to Virginio Cesarini, an Italian poet and fellow member of the Lyncean Academy.
