Artist's Description
Hydrogen emissions in the early universe, VLT image. These deep-field observations were made with the MUSE (Multi Unit Spectroscopic Explorer) spectrograph on ESO's Very Large Telescope (VLT). It shows large reservoirs of atomic hydrogen surrounding distant galaxies. The sensitivity of MUSE allowed for direct observations of dim clouds of hydrogen glowing with Lyman-alpha emission (ultraviolet) in the early Universe, revealing that almost the whole night sky is invisibly aglow. The galaxies were imaged in the optical and infrared with the Hubble Space Telescope (HST). This region of the sky is in the constellation of Fornax. Image published in 2018.
