Artist's Description

Hurricane Ivan, coloured doppler radar image. Ivan hitting Alabama, USA, on 16th September 2004 at 0757 GMT. The colours on the radar relate to the amount of rainfall. Blue and black is the lightest rainfall through green and yellow to orange and red, which is the heaviest. Data such as this can be used to predict a storm's behaviour. At the time this image was taken Ivan was classified as a category 5 hurricane and it covered an area of 640 kilometres along the American coast. Ivan is the sixth strongest storm to ever hit the Atlantic basin. Image taken using National Weather Service Radar.
