Artist's Description
Hurricane Hunters aircraft. These aircraft are used to provide meteorological information on hurricanes that cannot be obtained by satellites. In particular, the interior barometric pressure and accurate wind speed information. This is a WC-130J aircraft, equipped with a Stepped-Frequency Microwave Radiometer to allow surface winds directly below the aircraft to be measured. This flight, in May 2007, was to study Subtropical Storm Andrea, off the coast of Georgia, USA.
