Description
Human papilloma viruses. Seamless computer artwork of human papilloma virus (HPV) virions (particles). This virus consists of a protein capsid enclosing DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid), the virus' genetic material. HPV causes warts, which mostly occur on the hands and feet. Certain strains also infect the genitals. Although most warts are non-malignant (non-cancerous) some strains of HPV have been associated with cancers, especially cervical cancer. It is hoped that the Gardasil vaccine against the virus, which was approved for use in the UK on 8th June 2006, will drastically reduce the number of HPV-related cancers.
