Description
Coastal erosion. House located at the very edge of a cliff that has been eroded by the sea. The cliff is comprised of sand, pebbles and marl (grey clay). This mixture is not resistant to erosion. Man-made sea defences can only provide a local solution to the problem of erosion. This is bec- ause sediment taken from one stretch of coastline is often deposited on another part, giving protection there. Photographed at Happisburg in Norfolk, UK. In this area, the coastline receded 150m and lost 6m of sand depth on its beaches during 1980-95. The erosion is being promoted by offshore dredging of sand and aggregate to supply the construction industry.
