Hominid fossil skull of Australopithecus africanus a gracile australopithecine, found by Robert Broom in the limestone caves at Sterkfontein, South Africa in 1936. Broom, with a habit of giving each of his discoveries a new name, called this skull Plesianthropus transvaalensis. It is known affectionately as Mrs Ples. A. africanus was first described by Professor Raymond Dart in 1925 who claimed that it represented an early stage of human evolution. His claims were ridiculed until the many australopithecine discoveries of Broom confirmed Dart's findings. A.africanus lived from 3.0 to 2.3 million years ago and ranged throughout much of Africa.
