Artist's Description
Holtz electrostatic generator. Historical illustration of an apparatus used to generate electrical charge. The machine is an electrostatic induction generator that converts mechanical work into electrostatic energy. It was designed by German physicist Wilhelm Holtz (1836-1913) and dates from 1865. It consists of two plates of glass placed close together with a separation of 3-4 millimetres, one of which was rotated rapidly to generate the electric charge. It also sometimes known as an 'influence machine'. Artwork from 'Electricite' (1911) by Max de Nansouty, part of the 'Les merveilles de la science' series of 1867-1891 by Louis Figuier.
