Description
Smallpox vaccination. Historical caricature of vaccination against smallpox by using cowpox. British doctor Edward Jenner (at centre left) is inoculating patients with cowpox pustules that are being brought to him in a milk pail whilst still hot from the cow" by his boy assistant. Jenner's patients have cows emerging from their bodies. A painting on the wall shows people worshipping a golden statue of a cow. Jenner performed his first cowpox inoculation to confer immunity to smallpox on a boy in 1796. He called this procedure vaccination. Smallpox was a highly-contagious viral disease that caused death and disfigurement. Image drawn by James Gillray in 1802."
