Hiroshima before atom bomb. Image 1 of 2. Aerial photograph of the Japanese port of Hiroshima in April 1945, during World War II, several months before it was destroyed by a US atomic bomb on 6th August 1945. This image shows an area around 11 kilometres across. This was the first atomic bomb used in warfare, the second being used over Nagasaki three days later. Over 220,000 people died in the attacks, and thousands were injured. Japan surrendered a few days later. For Hiroshima after the bombing, see image T162/127.
