Description
Hippopotamus head. View of the head of a hippopo- tamus (or hippo, Hippopotamus amphibius) peering from below a carpet of water lettuce in a river. Hippos exhibit this behaviour when they feel threatened or bothered by events around them. Hippos are large water-loving herbivores which live in and around rivers throughout southern and eastern Africa. They spend the majority of the day resting in water and grazing on water plants. At night, they may leave the water to eat fruits and sugarcane. Hippos live in groups of around 15 individuals, although larger groups have been seen. Hippos may grow over 5 metres in length. Photographed on the Luangwa River, Zambia.
