Description
Hipparchus in Ptolemy's Almagest (1515). The 'Almagest' is a famous compendium authored by the 2nd century AD Greek astronomer Ptolemy. It summarised the learning of the Ancient Greeks, and was the basis of much of the astronomy and science of medieval Europe until the time of Copernicus (1543). This page is from book 5 of an edition produced in Venice, Italy, in 1515. It shows the geometric construction (right) used by Hipparchus in his determination of the distances to the Sun and Moon. The spheres are (from top) the Sun, Moon and Earth. The text is in Latin. This edition uses Gherardo da Cremona's translation from Arabic.
