Description
High-precision mass balance. 19th-century illustration of a mechanical beam mass balance, used in the 1890s to obtain high-precision measurements of mass. This was a design known as the Curie system. The balance is enclosed in a box to ensure uniform conditions, with several other measures taken to avoid vibrations and other phenomena affecting the results. This illustration is from 'Physique Populaire' (Emile Desbeaux, 1891).
