High-performance chromatography. Glowing bands, under fluorescent lighting, indicating resolved chemical components on a high-performance thin-layer chromatography (HPTLC) plate. These components can be identified by surface-sampling mass spectrometry. This research, on the use of mass spectrometry for surface sampling purposes, is being carried out at Oak Ridge National Laboratory, Tennessee, USA. Photographed in 2009.
